Workshop 1

1A Who's FICA and Why Did They Take My Money? Presented by: Tammy Hickman-Fay, CPA
This presentation will include instructions of how to use an excel spreadsheet to create a mock paycheck for the students. It will include a detailed explanation of the paychecks generated and how they can be used to teach students about payroll withholding taxes and fringe benefits offered by their employer.

1B Getting the Credit You Deserve Presented by: Brian Zitlow, TransUnion
During this session you'll learn about what's in a credit report and how they are used throughout different industries. We'll discuss the benefits of good credit, the impacts of bad credit, and what is a credit score? To assist students with no credit, we'll review different methods to help establish, or re-establish credit. If you plan to attend this session, bring a sense of humor. The subject of credit might seem boring, but your guaranteed to leave laughing.

1C Toolbox to Teach Personal Finance Presented by: Sue McDonnell, ISU Extension, and Dianne Taylor, Iowa Credit Union League
We will: share current research about teens and money management, introduce the participants to many useful websites (presentation materials will include a CD-rom with resources), provide an overview to the NEFE High School Financial Planning materials, and demonstrate the NEFE web-based personal finance training.

Workshop 2

2A What's Your Money Personality? Presented by: Tammy Hickman-Fay, CPA
This presentation will discuss how everyone has a primary money personality. The participants will determine their own money personality. And how your money personality impacts how you make money decisions. A money personality game to be played with students will be shared. The game is to help students determine their own money personality and explain to them how it impacts their decision making.

2B I Want to be Wealthy But I Don't Know How to Start Presented by: J.M. Seymour, author
Ordinary people can become millionaires, and many have done it. Unfortunately, most kids are learning how to be spenders not investors, which makes it really hard to reach millionaire status. Even if you aren't an investor yourself, here are some ways to help kids learn how to handle money so they can retire wealthy. Resource sheets included.

2C Teen Drivers' Risks & Realities Presented by: Doug Cutts, Iowa State Patrol
Cruise, Booze and Lose! Risky behaviors behind the wheel have long-term personal and financial impacts on teen drivers. Learn about the consequences teens face: law violations, loss of driving privileges, impounded car, high risk insurance, accidents, and injuries or death.

Paying for it eats big holes in our budgets, but what's it all about, and why is it important to you and your students? The Iowa Insurance Division offers this overview of the industry that it regulates and its importance as part of our financial picture.

3B Financial Markets 101: How Wall Street Works Presented by: Lois Ann McElroy Lindell, UNI
This session will provide an overview of the mechanics of U.S. equity markets, explore the relationships between markets, and interpreting market information. Hands-on classroom activities will be provided along with other resource information for participants.

Workshop 4

4A The Power of Plastic Presented by: Bob Redman, College Planning Center
This presentation is designed to inform high school students of the potential dangers of credit card use. It includes information regarding the use of credit cards, the associated costs, tips on handling credit wisely, and includes a video utilized on "60 minutes II". The intent of the presentation is to prepare students to better utilize credit and warn them of the possible consequences of its misuse.

This interactive and fun presentation will provide you with an overview of the challenges in teaching financial literacy to emerging market students. It will help you learn more about becoming proactive in your teaching and overcoming the cultural differences, instead of asking youself WHY? Also learn about other people's views of pertaining issues and will help you align yourself to better utilize your existing resources.

4C So You Want to Be a Millionaire Presented by: Sue McDonnell, ISU Extension
Learn the keys to building wealth in this interactive game, which is featured on the NEFE High School Financial Planning Web site. See how you can make the Rule of 72, Time value of money and Asset diversification come alive in your classroom.

5A Money Smarts: Choosing a Financial Planner Presented by: Patrick Van Nice, CFP
This presentation will provide an overview of the financial services industry. It will cover the various credentials for financial planners and what consumers should consider when selecting a planner. Its focus will be helping students to determine the vested interest of those involved in the financial services industry.

5C NEFE High School Financial Planning Curriculum Presented by: Dianne Taylor, Iowa Credit Union League, and Sue McDonnell, ISU Extension
Find out how you can obtain this basic financial management curriculum at no cost to your school.  Take a look at the six units in NEFE High School Financial Planning. Take home a copy of the free HSFPP student guide and try out some of the learn-by-doing activities designed to spark interest in your students.

6A All You Want to Know About IPERS Presented by: IPERS Retirement Counseling Staff
A representative of IPERS will explain the basics of Iowa's largest defined benefits pension plan. The results of this year's legislative session and their impact upon IPERS will be discussed. There will be time to ask questions about possible future changes and general questions about your retirement options.

6B Identity Theft...Don't Let It Happen To You! Presented by: Sue Bulver, Iowa Attorney General's Office
This program offers an overview of identity theft, and offers practical advice along with precautionary steps that consumers can take to reduce their risk of becoming an identity theft victim. Hand-outs will be available of the PowerPoint presentation and a fun 'Identity Theft Safety Test' which consists of 8-simple questions to get you thinking about your own identity and risk assessment!

6C Polishing Job Interview Skills Presented by: Bob Mitchell, SPHR, Bob Mitchell & Associates
Before students can get a job, they have to survive an interview with a potential employer. Participants will learn how to prepare for a successful interview and what to do during the interview.
